... Giving Life

19 years ago I was in a car accident. Within minutes of the impact, I'd lost 1/4th of the blood my small body contained. I can say that a number of things saved my life -- the man who stopped to help us and called the ambulance, the ambulance workers, the ER staff, the machine that kept my lungs breathing, the answered prayers of countless friends, family, and strangers... but one of the components that aided my recovery, that gave me life, were the two pints of blood I received. Somebody, or two somebodies, sometime the month before signed up to donate blood, and I am typing this post today.

I'm guessing this is why I feel so strongly that we should do what we can to help others that are facing similar needs as I was that Christmas years ago. It's always been important to me to give blood, starting with the day I finally hit the 110 lb min weight in High School, through today where I show up at the local Red Cross to donate whole blood every 8 weeks.

It's a simple, painless, procedure. I know not everyone can handle it. Some get woozy and pass out and some are not allowed to give because they've traveled to certain countries or have health issues. Most of us, however, are healthy enough to give... and our bodies were gloriously made to replace this donation within a relatively short period of time.

So next time you see a blood drive, or next time you have a free minute, consider stopping in. I guarantee it'll mean alot to someone, even if you never hear the thanks.

I started in College. I love to give blood, especially knowing that i don't have any diseases or anything funky... I am a healthy woman who can give people healthy, safe blood. Thanks for the reminder. I needed to be reminded. I'm going to look up a donation center soon!

Thanks for sharing your story Michelle. I'm blessed that someone gave you blood so that I could know you today!

Michelle, good reminder. Thank you. I need to be more purposeful in this area.

Sixteen years ago, my mom lost over half her blood as a result of a placental abruption in the seventh month of her last pregnancy. So she received life-giving blood also!

Michelle,
Thanks for the post, it was just what I needed to here.
In high school I had a really bad experience. The volunteer poked and prodded around and finally got the needle in, she was in the worst mood and kicked me out of the chair before I could even get the band-aid on and afterwards I passed out twice and was sent home from school.
I was like, well I am NOT doing that again.
I know it was a bad experience and who knows maybe the woman who had me was having a bad day. But I know that giving blood is important and can save lives. I have one of the not so common blood types too so thanks for the story and push I needed to go to the next blood drive in my area. :)

Michelle, I think you could've approached this topic in a different way. Should I feel like a bad person cuz I've never given blood?! I just don't like needles! Maybe you could be sensative to that?!

Thanks

hehe. Yeah right Jessica. The woman who has been poked by more needles than anyone I know. Who else in the world goes through a surgical procedure WITHOUT being put out or having a local to numb the pain?!?! ;-)

I too am thankful for those of you who can donate blood as I've made very good use of the donations twice...once after I was shot and then again after I gave birth to Elise. So a great big THANKS to you all, but most of all my life I owe to Jesus Christ who gave us all the gift of His life giving blood which has washed us all white as snow! AMEN! :)

I have to say that this is just yet another evidence of God's sovereign mercy in the lives of man. He gave us the knowledge to know how to collect and use blood in the lives of people. He is worthy of the praise in even this act of giving to others. And I agree that one should not feel any condemnation for not giving. God uses all people for many different things, even if they aren't following Him with all their hearts. Thanks Michelle for directing us to another avenue for glorifying the Lord if He so provokes our hearts toward this end.
