... The Appalachian Trail

Today Rebekah and I spent four hours hiking part of the Appalachian Trail. The thick, damp forest sheltered us from the heat of the day as we followed the blazes marking the tight path which snaked along the flowing creek. It was nice to be in the out of doors listening to the breeze blow through the tree tops and inhaling the fresh, clean air. We finished off the day at our favorite sandwich spot at UVA - Take it Away - and treated ourselves to an old fashioned hand dipped ice cream cone before driving home. All and all it was a lovely day. I'm glad we were able to keep our hiking tradition going, this time bringing along new baby Avery who is 6 months in utero. Way to go Rebekah!

Sounds like a wonderful day in the great outdoors! And I have to say I'm impressed by Rebekah -- 4 hours hiking at 6 months pregnant!

How cool. I love your descriptive writing! Kudos to your friend for hiking while preggo.

About The Good Earth & whether or not it picks up... I guess it could be a slow read, but I'm so into reading about old chinese culture that the pace of the story doesn't really bother me. I hope you like it. I need some book recommendations by the way. I'm getting ready to read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison while I'm at my Dad's. I've heard of The Unbearable Lightness of Being... What do you think of it so far?

Wow. That sounded like a blast. But man, Rebekah has my admiration. I don't know if I could have done that 6 months pregnant!

I'm glad you got to enjoy the outdoors. I miss you.

Judy- I don't recommend Unbearable Lightness. A girl I know gave it to me and I promised I'd read it but I'm not enjoying it at all. Of the books I've read this year I enjoyed the following most:
Fiction- March, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Water for Elephants, Lamb (if you have a more liberal sense of humor), Grapes of Wrath.
Non-Fiction- The Omnivores Dilemma
Past Years- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Life of Pi, The Power of One, Count of Monte Cristo, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Another book on Chinese culture is Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie. I read it about 5 years ago. I loved the picture on the cover so I bought the book. hehe. But it ended up being a good one. Have you read Memoris of Geisha yet? Japanese culture, not Chinese, but a real window into another world.
The Good Earth is picking up for me.

I guess you're feeling better! Yea! I can't believe Rebekah went hiking that long at 6 months pregnant! Go girl! Take It Away sounds so good right now. I remember when you, me, Rebekah and Joanna went hiking and ate there. Good memories. :)
