... Matthew's Birthday

We're finishing up our McDonalds lunch (his choice) when Matthew asks "can we go now?". Putting raceways and giants above fries and soda, he's made his choice. "Sure", I respond, and we hop in the car.

Next stop: Freemason section of Norfolk. We run by the Koi pond to watch the giant carp, but we don't stay long. There are giant Battleships to behold and Paddlewheel Ferry's to ride.

After crossing the Elizabeth River into Olde Towne Portsmouth, we walk to the Children's Museum of Virginia, our real destination. As soon as we arrive we are ushered into the Planetarium which I count as a blessing after the 30 minute walk in the scorching sun. I need a break, but Matthew doesn't. The minute the presentation finished, he's off. Giant chairs, marketplaces with working registers, a real police motorcycle. This is going to be a lot of fun.

Trains, Giants, Science Experiments...

Kaleidoscopes, Bubbles, Music Rooms...

We raced through the exhibits hitting the best ones two or three times. Eventually, Matthew must have felt he experienced all the museum had to offer as he declared he was ready to go home. OK.
We walk back to the dock to wait for the ferry. This is where he begins to teach me about the various depths of the ocean and the types of sea predators that live there. I enjoy his enthusiasm for the water and boats, and we perch ourselves at the very front of the ferry on our trip back to Waterside.

Thank you for a fun date Matthew. Happy 7th Birthday!

wow- he's 7! My kids don't stop growing. I still remember him as a 4 year old! Looks like a fun day. I love that you take each of the kids on a special date to celebrate their birthdays- that's so cool and inspiring.

Great train set!!! Hmmm... reminds me of a 'mighty' movie.
